Getting to Pompeii

Pompeii is well-connected by public transportation, making it accessible from major Italian cities and international airports. Here are all the ways to reach the archaeological site.

By Train

Circumvesuviana

The most common way to reach Pompeii is via the Circumvesuviana commuter train, operated by EAV. The relevant line runs from Naples through Pompeii to Sorrento.

Important: Alight at Pompei Scavi - Villa dei Misteri station (not "Pompei Santuario," which is the modern town station further from the main entrance).

High-Speed Rail

For travelers from Rome, Florence, or other major Italian cities, high-speed trains operated by Trenitalia (Frecciarossa) and Italo run to Naples Centrale, which is adjacent to the Circumvesuviana terminal at Naples Garibaldi. The transfer is straightforward.

By Bus

SITA Sud buses connect Pompeii with the Amalfi Coast towns (Amalfi, Positano, Ravello) and Salerno. Busitalia operates services between Naples and Pompeii. Several hop-on/hop-off tourist buses also serve the route, though they tend to be slower.

By Car

Pompeii is accessible via the A3 motorway (Autostrada del Sole), which connects Naples to Salerno. Take the Pompei Ovest exit and follow signs to the archaeological park. Paid parking is available near all three entrances, typically costing EUR3-5 per day.

Note: Traffic in the Naples metropolitan area can be extremely congested, and finding parking during peak season can be challenging. Public transport is generally recommended.

By Organized Tour

Numerous tour operators offer day trips to Pompeii from Naples, Rome, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast. These typically include transportation, skip-the-line entry, and a guided tour. While more expensive than independent travel, they offer convenience and expert guidance.

From the Airport

Naples International Airport (NAP) is the nearest airport. To reach Pompeii:

1. Take the Alibus airport shuttle to Naples Piazza Garibaldi (20 minutes, EUR5)
2. Transfer to the Circumvesuviana train to Pompei Scavi (35 minutes, ~EUR3.60) Total journey time: approximately 1-1.5 hours including wait times.
